Listening to Michelle Obama’s New Podcast Is Basically ASMR

As you probably know if you’re a human being living on planet Earth, this year has been an absolute mess. A MESS. Every time I look down at my phone, it seems like another part of society is falling apart. And for many people (myself included), anxiety levels are at an all-time high because of the general state of, well, everything. But thankfully, something has come along to help me with that. It’s Michelle Obama’s new podcast, and listening to it is basically like ASMR.

Full disclosure, you could say I am a MObama stan. I read her book, went to the book tour stop in Brooklyn, and watched the Netflix documentary about said book tour. I follow her on Instagram, and I generally just appreciate her presence. Whenever she posts about something like what the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality means to her or why we should all vote, I cry. She makes me very emotional!! So I probably would have listened to this even if the state of affairs were totally normal. But it’s even better right now, in this current moment.

The first episode, which features Barack Obama as a guest and is the only one that’s been released so far, opens with Michelle saying, “Let’s dive right in.” With those four words, I felt like I had just walked into a spa. I was suddenly calm, cool, and collected. Yes, Michelle, I’d love to dive in. Thank you for asking. But let’s be honest, Michelle could literally read me the phone book and I would be more at ease than I am in just about any other scenario. She even won a Grammy award for the audio recording of her book. I was off to a phenomenal start as a listener, and I was only about five seconds into the episode.

And then I heard Barack’s voice over the speaker, and it just catapulted me into another dimension entirely. I’m sure you can hear his voice in your head as you’re reading this, and it’s probably soothing as f*ck, right? Imagine 50 straight minutes of that. This is not in any way to discredit how lovely Michelle’s voice is, but it’s the combination of the two that really got me in my feelings, because I associate him, and them, with better times. Remember when people could form full sentences? And speak with empathy? And in a tone that’s not a yell? What a time to be alive. Hearing the two of them now brings me back to that, and it’s really nice, dammit.

I can’t even really attest to what Barack and Michelle talked about in the episode. Frankly, I was so at peace it’s like my brain went a lil numb, and I mean that as the most sincere compliment. I promise, if you listen to it yourself, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
