FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis’s dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father’s firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman’s trail, Bateman’s mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman’s girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis’s novel inspired his murder spree.

As for Bale's body (butt etc.) here, it's all natural, I read so many stories from the cast, how hard he work for it& how amazing&strange he was on set. Quotes : "I had to. I'm English. I had never gone to a gym in my life, he says. You lose that quicker than you gain it. I said to [director Mary Harron], 'I'm still gonna make this, and I'm still gonna keep prepping on it'… Everybody thought I was crazy, but it became a crusade for me. In fact, Bale was so sure that he was right for the part of Bateman that he threw himself into working out in order to attain his muscular physique.
Bale finally secured the role, and went full method for the duration of shooting, speaking in an American accent even when he wasn't on set, refusing to socialize with his co-stars, and training relentlessly to stay shredded.
"I also remember that after every day he would go work out for hours and hours and hours to get into that incredible shape," says Matt Ross, who played Bateman's colleague Luis Carruthers. "I remember Mary and I talking about just what an incredible work ethic he had."

Bale is known for his work ethic and work on his body, especially in American Psycho, plus Bale is known for his naturalness, even today when you look at his face, you can tell he is getting older naturally. Also, Bale apparently has great genes, so genetic ability plus that kind of dedication. Most people are just lazy.

Bale was an absolute genius in this role, two things. First of all, there is a video on YouTube, with the original American Psycho script vs the scene, just watch video titled : ''American Psycho (2000) – Hip To Be Square | Screenplayed'' here on youtube. And you can see, what a genius Bale is, because in the script there were no instructions at all, it's all improvised by Bale alone. Bale himself added all these fantastic details: dance, screams, gestures. Secondly, geniuses are often ahead of their time, with their ideas etc., and on the occasion of an interview for the 20th anniversary of American Psycho, Bale admitted that he had recently learned, that during the filming of American Psycho, the rest of the actors thought that Bale was not doing it right because they had no idea what Bale was doing. Only after watching the finished film, the rest of the cast understood what Bale was doing and they admitted that he was a genius in this role. Including Willem Dafoe said, Christian was incredible. And this is a true sign of genius – when you are ahead of your time and do something that at first seems stupid or incomprehensible to the rest of the world, and then it turns out, that it was brilliant, and history and everyone agrees with you.
