Paola Mayfield Releases an ASMR Video

Paola Mayfield—a model-turned-fitness-coach from Colombia—and her husband, Russ Mayfield, shot to fame on the first season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé. They’ve also been featured on spinoffs like 90 Day Fiancé: Pillow Talk and 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After.

Since then, Pao and Russ had a son, Axel, in early 2019. Meanwhile, Paola has made a number of changes in her life, including undertaking major weight loss, starting a coaching business, and building a social media following focused on holistic health, nutrition, and wellness.

Recently, Paola opened up (via whisper) about making changes to her diet in an ASMR video on her YouTube channel. In the video, the 90 Day Fiancé star explained why she became a vegetarian, and eventually a vegan.

Paola explained that she gained a lot of weight after moving to the U.S.

As her ASMR video began, Paola explained that she was releasing a quiet video because little Axel was asleep, and she didn’t want to wake him up. Reflecting on her initial move to the U.S. from her home country of Colombia, the 90 Day Fiancé star said that a mix of lifestyle changes and her TLC filming schedule led her to gain weight shortly after marrying Russ.

When she first moved to Oklahoma, Paola explained, she ate just about “everything” except bacon and all pork products. She had no dietary restrictions and didn’t worry much about what she ate on a daily basis.

Suddenly thrust into the “role of a housewife,” Paola found herself ordering a lot of delivery and going out to eat all the time with her new husband. “I didn’t know how to cook,” the 90 Day Fiancé star revealed.

On top of her limited skills in the kitchen, Russ had a busy work schedule, and filming for the first season of 90 Day Fiancé often took all day. When they were finally done with filming, Russ and Paola just wanted to order takeout and relax. Naturally, they both gained weight and began to neglect their health.

The ’90 Day Fiancé’ star went to doctors, but nothing seemed to help

Along with her weight gain, Paola continued, came health issues.

“I started to feel sick, because of all the junk food and fast food that I was eating,” the 90 Day Fiancé star said. “I was having really bad pain. My stomach was hurting. My stomach was always bloated.”

Russ’ wife went to a doctor and got a full battery of tests, but no one could pinpoint the exact issue. Paola was prescribed medications, but nothing seemed to help her underlying health problems.

And her physical health wasn’t all that suffered. Paola’s mental health also began to decline as her physical symptoms worsened.

“I started feeling super depressed,” the 90 Day Fiancé star admitted. The fact that she was in a new country, of course, didn’t exactly help matters.

Paola began to do some research about her symptoms. Eventually, she discovered that her meat-based diet, and especially her love of fast food, might be contributing to her pain. She began to pay more attention to what she was eating, “not just to lose weight or to look good, but to feel good inside” and to help with her “energy levels and emotions.”

Russ’ wife explained why she finally shifted to a vegan diet

After Paola shifted to a healthier diet, there were a few other factors that influenced her ultimate decision to go vegan.

Once, the 90 Day Fiancé star said, she was invited to Russ’ family’s house for Thanksgiving. She ate meat and later found out it was deer. She felt angry about the discovery, she explained, because she felt like she had the “right to choose what she put into her body.”

Paola wasn’t happy with Russ’ failure to tell her what was in the dish. “I was so upset with him,” Paola said. “I was like, ‘You know what, enough. I’m not going to eat any more meat.’”

At first, Paola stopped eating all meat except fish. Later, documentaries about animal cruelty and large-scale meat production at “big corporations” led her to eat a completely vegan diet.

As for animals, the 90 Day Fiancé star said, “I respect them because they are alive, and they deserve respect.”

Now, Paola ate a strictly vegan diet. Russ would never completely give up meat, according to his wife, but he ate a much more plant-based diet now as well. Even the couple’s son, Axel, ate very limited meat and dairy, except a few eggs and some cheese on a limited basis.

Paola encouraged her followers to “do their own research” when it came to their diet. She also urged them to ask questions about what was in their food and to learn where it came from in order to protect their health.
