Some people believe that by the time photography was invented painting had reached its ultimate level of realism, and that something like Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism etc. would have come about anyway, even without the influence of photography.
In the early days of photography the process was so complex, expensive and time consuming that it was much more art-like that it is now, and there was a major school of photography called Pictorialism which deliberately set out to follow the ethos of painting. It is derided by photography historians these days but it does show that during the 19th century photography was seen very differently to how it has been seen since the beginning of the 20th century when small and easy to use cameras were first introduced.
I have seen people draw photo real drawings with ballpoint pens. I don't know how they do this without the pens rapidly getting clogged with big blobs of ink. Are they special drawing ballpoints?
