Every once in a while a project arrives that upon first glance appears straight forward and simple but as more time is spent understanding the nuances of the work involved, well, things get interesting.
And such is the case with the painting featured in this video series. What appears fairly simple is anything but and requires inventive thinking, novel materials and even new equipment to facilitate a successful conservation.
Follow along in this five part series as the painting moves through the various stages and treatments of conservation and restoration.

Hey folks, since many of you asked; the white dot in the eye was not paint or a glint. It was a chip in the paint layer that was filled in and retouched. It looks odd that the eye has no flint or highlight, and at one point it may have but was lost during another cleaning. I’d love to add one but injecting narrative into the painting isn’t my job and so as much as it cries out for a highlight- I’m not the artist and as such cannot add that. Bummer I know but thems the breaks.
Wow. Watched all 5 episodes! Very nice.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ALL WEEK
iv'e really been on edge waiting for the next episodes of this series. Stellar work and wonderful restoration!
I lost my sh*t at the recomendation of vacuuming the bed.
When I need a psychological re-grounding, I watch this or people saving seals from plastic waste on the Namibian coast. Both give me a wee bit of hope. Oh, and that varnish at the end is amaze-balls. It's like French-polished wood, only better.
Bravo
I love this!
King.
I love how Julian is always so skillful with ads. It's like he put in filling medium in between his restoration clips and gracefully retouched the surface with the ExpressVPN promotion.
12:52 Julian knows his vintage gaming…
I for one love the multi-part format – keep it up and thank you Julian for this journey!
Julian is definitely the Xzibit of the conservation world.
great series. So relaxing and informative
This really deserves a rewatch to review how this piece started out.
The restoration looks perfect, but almost too perfect.
Then you go back and see the condition of that back panel and all the interim attempts to stabilize it! What a mess; a woodworker’s nightmare!
The choices to get to where it is now are remarkably executed and inevitable if that piece is to last much longer.
Now I’m back to thinking, wealthy owner, historic (?) house, no HVAC? Meaning no heat or A/C, in Chicago?
Is this hanging in a castle? 🙄
Excellent series. Would be good to see clients reaction, like in the UK series ‘The Repair Shop’.
Julian, is it adequate to camouflage the medium the work is painted on? You said the coat of resin would hide the grains of the wood, for instance. But the work was effectively painted on wood. Shouldn't we respect the material? That is, it was painted on wood, should we expect it looks like it was painted on canvas, or a smoother surface? Thanks for the videos! Love your work!
This has been a long long time coming! Amazing amazing work!!
Am i the only one who would like to see the reactions of the clients too?
Did i miss the painting cleaning?? I thought it would be this episode?
I think the biggest impact your channel will have Julian is the inspiration you will provide to would be restoration masters that without your videos perhaps would have never discovered the craft. Kudos to you on this amazing journey and to many more in the future!
That ad was SO smooth!
Here in the UK we don't eat Potato chips in bed at 3:00am we're above that sort of thing. We call them "crisps".
'Put up with' the series? Omg I literally yelled with joy when each new episode came out. Now I will go into withdrawal 🙁 …
The quality on that restoration is amazing
Dude I watched all your videos in a spawn of 3 days. Five parts of masterpiece are nothing
This was a complete joy to watch. Thank you so much for giving us such a detailed look into the process of preserving a painting on a split wood panel. You are masterful in your craft, and it is privilege to see you work.
i am also very highly molecular
Невероятная работа! Браво!
watched every part, what a journey! I always get excited when a new video comes out no matter what it is.
The eye looks horrible
So, so, good. Well worth the wait.
Perfect

I hope i could one day become a conservateur as you!
