xQc says he “didn’t expect” to be banned on Twitch for streaming the Olympics

On Wednesday, July 28, one of Twitch’s biggest streamers xQc was banned from the platform for five hours following his latest live stream. The streamer took to Twitter to respond to his latest suspension.

Streamer bans on Twitch is a common occurrence. Every now and then, one of the platform’s streamers faces suspension for various reasons. The reasons range from violating Twitch’s community guidelines to flouting one of DMCA’s rules and more.

The latest streamer to land under the axe has been xQc, one of the platform’s biggest names. The streamer has 6.6 million followers on the live-streaming platform. He is one of Twitch’s biggest gaming creators, with his live streams featuring him playing games like Minecraft, Among Us, GTA 5, Fortnite and more.

Why is xQc banned on Twitch?

xQc, ( real name, Félix Lengyel) landed in hot waters yesterday after his channel was cut off amidst an ongoing live stream.

When his channel was pulled off air the streamer had been live-streaming himself watching the Olympics’ Judo match between Austria’s Michaela Polleres v. Japan’s Arai Chizuru. Hence, the streamer’s ban was likely related to him streaming the Olympics match.

Twitch and NBC have partnered together to bring the original live content from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to the streaming platform.

xQc took to Twitter shortly after and talked about being banned for live-streaming the Olympics, claiming he “didn’t expect” to be banned.

Streamer responds to ban on Twitter

The streamer took to Twitter responding to his latest ban. Talking to his fans he wrote, “I THINK I GOT MY CHANNEL LIVE-DMCA’d. I TOOK NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FINE. REALLY DIDN’T EXPECT IT BUT I COUL’VE EASILY AVOIDED THIS. SORRY FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED INCLUDING THE VIEWERS. I’LL BE BETTER/SMARTER NEXT TIME AND FOLLOW GUIDELINES MORE STRICTLY.”

For the uninitiated DMCA, which abbreviates to Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is applied on a streamer when they are caught streaming another person/entities’ copyrighted work on their channel. The original creator of the content can send Twitch a takedown notification.

This isn’t the first time that xQc has been banned from Twitch. The latest ban is the Canadian gamer’s fourth one since the start of 2020. His first suspension came in March 2020, with him being forced off the platform for three days.

The second followed a couple of months later, lasting only a day. However, his ban from November 25, 2020, lasted the longest, spanning seven days. His latest ban will last for five hours.

Other recent streamer bans on the platform explored

By now, it is no news that Twitch does not hesitate when it comes to punishing its creators for violating the DMCA or its community guidelines.

Only last month, the platform’s leading female streamer Amouranth aka, Kaitlyn Michelle Siragusa, who has 3.9 million followers, faced a ban for controversial ASMR streams.

Following this, another streamer named Indiefoxx was banned for “ASMR Meta” streams. The recent bans on these female creators are an example of Twitch’s ongoing actions to moderate “sexually suggestive content” on the platform.
